About The Barnstable

Nearly Two Centuries of Trusted Protection

Our Performance, Your Peace of Mind

How We Got Here

Our journey began in 1833. To protect their Cape Cod community against the threat of fire, a group of forward-thinking residents established Barnstable County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, grounded in sound underwriting principles and built for the long run.

Adapting and Evolving

Over time, The Barnstable dropped the word fire from its name, reflecting its transition from specialized fire insurer to comprehensive property and casualty insurance provider. Today, through carefully selected area independent agents, we offer homeowners, renters, and personal umbrella liability insurance.

Our Relationship with Policyholders

Because The Barnstable is a mutual insurance company, our policyholders aren’t just customers—they’re our members and key stakeholders. Our board of directors, elected by our members, acts in conjunction with our management, guiding strategic directions, and upholding values defining us since 1833.

Credit Rating Agency AM Best has repeatedly awarded us its coveted A rating, spotlighting our financial strength and commitment to policyholders.

Our Mission

Our principal intent remains maintaining a sustainable, high-quality property insurance market on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and the SouthCoast. We are dedicated to unwavering financial and operational preparation, ensuring property protection no matter the challenge.
